Spotlight Series: Demetrius Billie

Meet Demetrius Billie, a superintendent with FS 360!

Tell us about your background?

My background started in construction started with training in the construction engineering technology program at Florida A&M University. I then moved to a job as super/construction in the residential side of construction, working with companies like DR. Horton, Ryland, and eventually a Town Home builder in Atlanta, Pasquinelli. Needing a change of scenery and housing market taking a downturn I decided to try my luck on the commercial side of things and that’s when I applied for a position with FS 360 back in 2014 for the position of at the time of “whatever was available” and started as a Superintendent.

How long have you been working with FS 360 and what motivated you to join the team?

I’ve been with FS 360 since April ’14 and I think the welcoming family environment displayed by Ernest and the management staff at the time motivated me to join the team. I was also able to train in different areas, being my first time on the commercial side the motivation was the challenge of learning the business and seeing how the different skill sets mirrored each other.

What types of projects are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the RICE EDA III project and just completed the Cascade United Methodist project. These two projects have their challenges due to the complexities of making renovations or improvements while being occupied. RICE for example has total demolition of an area where on the other side of the separation wall there are occupied active offices with staff members. This means no unnecessary noise or escaping odors at certain times of the day, while keeping the project schedule moving. Before these two projects there were the Chase Bank new build in Summerhill, Chase Bank refresh projects where several banks around the city were brought up to new design standards, and before that a Wells Fargo/Chase Bank conversion in Charleston, SC.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement during your time here?

I think memorable experiences are created by the different types of jobs and locations of jobs I’ve completed while working for the company. Working on projects in Dallas, TX, and Charleston, SC all had their challenges which helped in my career development.

What led you to working in the construction industry?

Grandfather, father, and Uncles all worked in construction in some capacity my entire life so I can say the plan was probably laid before I knew there was a plan.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start a career in construction?

Listen, take notes, and just absorb everything around you like a sponge. Start with the basics by getting a strong understanding of the fundamental skills and tools necessary to do your job. Networking is also key, connecting with like minded individuals can lead to job opportunities or just good advice.
